Stachys byzantina

Striking evergreen perennial with fluffy silver leaves and pink purple flowers in mid-summer.

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Stachys byzantina (affectionately known commonly as ‘Lambs Ears’) is something really different for the garden. It emerges in spring as a mound of fuzzy green leaves that quickly take on a silver look, contrasting with the mid-greens elsewhere in the garden. The leaves retain the fuzzy, almost felt-like texture throughout the season (and through mild winters), making them a joy for the more tactile gardeners among us! From mid-summer the plant puts on tall stems that develop into flowering buds, which then open into small purple-pink flowers.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 45cm (18 inches) when in flower or slightly lower when just in leaf, with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Sun and well-drained soil are this plant’s preferred conditions. They will survive with less sun, but the growth may be less compact and the sheen on the foliage less silver (the colour actually arises from lots of hairs, an adaptation to help with water loss that is more important in sunnier exposures). If grown as a foliage plant cutting off the flower stems as they emerge encourages stronger and more compact foliage growth. They work excellently as front of border foliage plants for instance, where they provide a foil for stronger coloured flowers in around them, or as part of container displays. We grow ours on a rocky slope where the silver colour works well with the stones and is livened up by flowering alpines planted in and around them.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
