As a young plant nursery we have been busy over the last few years building our stock from the ground up, and have been gradually increasing the range of plants we have made available for sale. We specialise in herbaceous perennials – principally those that do well in our local climate, which, being Cornwall, can be humid and wet, particularly over winter! We consider Cornwall to be something of a canary in the coalmine for the effects of climate change, which is bringing wetter, milder winters to all of us in the UK.
Update, March 2026
Spring has sprung! After one of the wettest winters any of us can remember we’re finally seeing some drier weather, and as the days grow longer and temperatures begin to pick up our plants are gradually waking up from their winter slumber.
Like any plant grower, amateur or professional, we have had our share of winter losses and so we are currently reviewing and tidying our stock to make sure plants are healthy before placing them on sale again. This means that though some of our plants are already back on sale others will be made available for purchase over the months ahead as we finish this work. The timing of this depends on many things – for example some plants are slower to wake than others, or to root through once potted up. As we’re still a growing business we’ll also be adding new stock grown this year or last year and is ready for sale.
If you’re interested in our plants and what we do we would encourage you to check back from time to time to see what we have for sale. In the meantime please do feel to drop us a line at info@crossgatenursery.co.uk with any questions about the plants we’ll be selling in the year ahead.
Crossgate Nursery is sited at an ancient crossing point over the Tamar, where the meandering river divides Cornwall from Devon.
The Cornish climate has long been wetter and milder than much of the UK. But the added unpredictability of the climate in recent years has made growing conditions for us all particularly challenging.
This all means that the concept of ‘right plant, right place’ has never been more relevant to us as growers. As we grow the nursery we will therefore develop our specialism in plants that can adapt to flourish in our changing climate.
We hope you’ll take a look around, and we look forward to growing and adapting together.
In our first two trading years we sold a number of plants through our Etsy and Ebay pages, before bringing this website online last year to provide customers with a means of buying from us directly. We were delighted to hear from so many folk who bought and rehoused our plants – for a quality focused business such as ours knowing our plants are thriving in new homes is wonderful to hear!
