Description
Nepeta subsessilis ‘Blue Panther’ is, like most garden nepetas, a brilliant garden plant. It has fresh, almost lime-green, aromatic and lightly toothed foliage that grows in compact and neat clumps and provides a fresh, bright presence in the garden even before the flowers emerge. The flowers emerge from early summer onwards on short stems above the foliage, and have a lovely mauve-blue colour that lasts for a long time right through the middle of the summer. The flowers also have really unusual electric blue anthers – which may have given rise to the naming of the cultivar! The plants also grow really compact and neatly, making them great for container growing.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre pots. They will grow to a maximum of around 50cm high and wide (22 inches).
Growing Advice
Nepeta subsessilis ‘Blue Panther’ is an easy to grow plant that is very hardy and reliable and doesn’t demand too much – just a spot with a decent amount of sun and soil that is reasonably well-drained – though they will respond to rich soils with more lush growth and flowers. They can be attractive to slugs when young, but will be left alone once they have matured a little. You may want to pinch out the young stems as well to encourage more branching, a more compact form, and more flowers.
