Description
Sisyrinchium striatum is a really unusual but very useful Iris-like plant, grown often in dry settings in full sun in amongst drought-tolerant planting or Mediterranean herbs. It has sprays of attractive, grey-green flat leaves, very similar to something like a small bearded Iris, and in summer puts up spikes adorned with beautiful pale-yellow flowers. When fully-grown the plant puts on quite a show. Its flowers work as an excellent contrast to pastel blues and purples while it shares with Iris the ability to provide strong foliage contrast in a mixed border – there is nothing quite like it in form and colouration.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) and a spread of around 30cm (12 inches).
Growing Advice
Sisyrinchium striatum does best in full sun settings, in well-drained, moderately fertile soils. It doesn’t like to completely dry out, but won’t tolerate winter wet well so avoid heavy soils.
