Description
Phlox paniculata ‘Sweet Summer Ocean’ is a shot of colour in the mid-summer border and, along with other paniculata cultivars, a romantic cottage garden stalwart. The strong foliage emerges in bright green with bronze tints before fading to mid-green later in the season, providing a strong contrast with the bold, billowing lilac-coloured flowers that sit atop the strong stems from mid-summer onwards. Phlox paniculata cultivars are highly scented, and extremely popular with pollinators of all sorts. A perfect border plant for any sort of cottage garden arrangement, Phlox paniculata cultivars like this also provide a strong structure that makes them a versatile and adaptable addition to all sorts of garden schemes. The long, strong stems also make them excellent for growing for cut flowers.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 90cm (35 inches) and a spread of around 40-50cm (24-36 inches).
Growing Advice
Phlox paniculata cultivars are among the easiest of garden phloxes to grow. They are tolerant of a range of soils and conditions, from full sun to part shade, even in containers, and are rarely touched by slugs and snails. They can be prone to developing powdery mildew later in the season, particularly in very dry or wet conditions, so they are best sited where there is plenty of air movement and with a bit of space to breathe.
