Persicaria capitata

Ground-covering fast-growing persicaria with long-lasting pink flowers

Price for 2 plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Persicaria capitata is a lesser-known plant but one that we’ve really come to to love. It’s main function is as a ground-covering plant that will scramble over rocks and mound up slowly, forming a dense mat of small-leaved, deep green and maroon foliage and, from mid-summer onwards, putting out lots of pale pink pom-pom like flowers that go on and on throughout the summer and into autumn. We really like the plant softening harder edges in the garden – rocks, steps or the edging of beds, or tumbling over the edge of pots. It’s great in a more relaxed schemes but also works brilliantly – like many other persicarias – in tropical schemes. Though in truth it’s an adaptable thing that will work in a range of garden arrangements.
These established plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 15cm – 30cm (higher once it has mounded up on itself) and will spread as far and wide as it’s allowed.

Growing Advice

Like most persicarias, persicaria capitata does better in soils that don’t dry out, in full sun or partial shade locations. They will grow in heavier shade, but won’t flower as strongly. They are pretty easy to grow in truth and the biggest challenge will be trying to direct the creeping growth – but it is easy to pull out or snip off. Where it is contained it mounds up attractively, in our experience.
