Nepeta mussinii

Ground-covering version of the classic cottage garden perennial

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Nepeta mussinii is a lovely, low-growing variant of catmint – the classic cottage garden plant. Unlike other forms of catmints it has a habit to mound and creep in a more relaxed form, providing excellent ground cover in a sunnier spot and offering a more relaxed alternatives to Nepeta racemosa cultivars and hybrids. Like all nepetas, it provides a very-long flowering, beautiful presence at the front of a border or spilling out of a container. From early summer to mid summer (and into late summer later if spent flowers are removed or the plant is cut back) it carries numerous lavender-blue blooms on short spikes atop aromatic, grey-green foliage that is the hallmark of many of the garden nepetas. It is a remarkably low-maintenance and versatile plant and will provide months of trouble-free flowers, coming back every year. In our opinion nepetas like this should be a staple of every cottage garden.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will flower from early summer and will grow to an ultimate height of 30cm (12 inches) with a spread of around 50cm (20 inches).

Growing Advice

Catmints prefer well-drained soil on the drier side, and as much sun as possible, but they will take light shade. Keep the spent blooms deadheaded, or cut the plant back in mid-summer for a fresh flush of foliage and new flowers later in summer. The plant can be chopped to the ground in autumn or in spring to make way for new growth.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
