Linum perenne

Lovely perennial flax with masses of white or sky-blue flowers in summer

Price is for three plants in 9cm containers

Description

Linum perenne is a strikingly beautiful, semi-evergreen perennial flax that forms tufts of foliage with narrow, blue-green leaves on slim, straight stems. In summer the stems branch out at the top into a mass of buds, which open into small bright flowers that range from sky-blue to white in colour (the plants you receive may flower blue or white). The rounded shape and strong coloration contrasts smartly with the wiry foliage. Though the flowers last for just a day, the blooms keep coming so that in mid-summer this plant can stay in bloom for up to 2 months in locations with a bit of protection from the mid-afternoon sun. Linums can be grown as accent, specimen plants, or will work fabulously massed or drift planted in prairie schemes or combined with grasses and rudbeckias. The dried seed heads add extra interest as the colours fade into autumn.
These young plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 9cm containers (the price is for 3 of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) with a slightly smaller spread of up to 45cm (18 inches).

Growing Advice

Like many grasses and other prairie plants, linums do best in well-drained soils. They prefer not to dry out completely, so keep them in moister spots if possible, and for the best flower longevity give them a sunny spot with a bit of protection from the sun at the hottest part of the day.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
