Libertia grandiflora (two 1 litre plants)

Versatile grass-like neat, clumping perennial with sprays of white flowers in early summer

Price is for two plants in one-litre containers

Description

Libertia grandiflora, otherwise known as the New Zealand Satin Flower has a special place in our garden. It’s one of those plants that in our experience has proved itself to be adaptable, drought-resilient and capable of coping with inhospitable growing conditions (like shade in our case) – in contradiction of the ‘official’ growing advice. It has also proved invaluable for the contrast it provides in the herbaceous borders, and the year-round presence it has. For much of the season it consists of an upright clump of slender blades of mid-green foliage, contained in a neat circle. In this form it provides a great foil for broad-leaved shrubs and perennials, and works beautifully with ferns and other finer leaves in the borders. In late spring it puts up strong stems topped with massed pure white flowers. Such is its display and its neat habit that it can also hold its own in a specimen spot.
These established plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost and are supplied in one-litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to a height of around 90cm (three feet), with the flowers held a foot or so above this, and a spread of around 60cm, or two feet.

Growing Advice

Officially Libertia grandiflora likes lots of sunshine and good drainage. Going by the book it also benefits from a little protection in cold winters. In our experience however it copes with shady spots, even those under trees where the soil dries out in summer (at least once established), and the dense crown of the plant tends to protect it over winter (though we are in a milder part of the country). Still, flowering performance is likely to be stronger in a sunnier location, but we grow it mainly for the contrast and neat form the foliage provides, and for that purpose it seems adaptable to all sorts of garden situations.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
