Description
Dianthus deltoides, or Dwarf Garden Pinks, as commonly known, is a low-growing evergreen plant, with neat cushions of small-leaved foliage, followed by masses of small flowers in strong patterns of red, white and pink. The flowers are borne on strong stems and have frilled edges to the petals, and make the entire plant burst into life when they open in mid summer. It flowers for a long time over summer, which, combined with its compact form, makes it ideal for summer containers, rock gardens or front of border spots that get lots of sun.
These established plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1 litre pots (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of around 15cm (6 or 7 inches) with similar spread.
Growing Advice
Garden pinks are popular for a reason – they are charming, easy to grow plants that ask only for sun and a spot where they can really show off. Like many alpines they do best and will come back most strongly when planted in spots with good drainage and are absolutely fine in spots with poor soil. They can be trimmed all over when most of the flowers are finished later in summer, which will keep the plant compact and healthy.
