Description

Viola riviniana Purpurea Group is a lovely little perennial Dog Violet that is very easy to grow (some might say too easy!) and will spread itself around via runners and seeds where it’s happy. It’s a stand out among perennial violets for its sultry, dark blue-green leaves with blushed red undersides that are heart shaped and tumble over each other in loose, spreading mounds, providing great interest even when not in flower. When the flowers do emerge mingled among the foliage, small and delicate and a light blue-purple in colour, with the signature ‘lips’. A lovely plant for naturalising in woodland settings among bulbs or for tumbling around on slopes, particularly where it’s allowed to wander freely!

These established plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 1 litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to around 10-15cm tall (4-5 inches), with a spread of around 30cm (12 inches).

Growing Advice

Exceptionally easy to grow, the biggest thing to consider is to site it where you don’t mind it scrambling around, where its lovely leaf colour provides an effective contrast (the heart-shaped leaves look good for instance paired with ferns or the strappy foliage of spring bulbs) and where the flowers don’t get too lost. Speaking of flowers – like with many perennials it will flower best in sunnier spots, but is otherwise not too fussy about soil though doesn’t like to dry out too much (though it is tolerant to drier soils once established).
