Tricyrtis hirta

Unusual, exotic flowers in clusters above robust mid-green foliage

Established plant in two-litre container

Description

Tricyrtis hirta (commonly known as the Japanese Toad Lily) is a truly unusual plant with very exotic looking, striking flowers but that is fully hardy and quite happy performing in shady borders and woodland gardens. It emerges in spring from robust underground rhizomes, putting out stems decked in interestingly ribbed, subtly mottled foliage with a slightly glossy sheen. These climb up through the early season until later in summer when the buds emerge in dense clusters. When they do flower they really stand out – the flowers look very orchid-like in appearance, with splayed white petals dotted with burgundy-purple speckles, reddish-purple stigmas and yellow and orange centres. A real must, in our view, for adding interest to a shadier spot in the garden or just for those interested in growing something more exotic and unusual with the added benefit of coping with the excesses of the British climate!
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 75cm (30 inches) and will slowly spread around in the right conditions via its underground rhizomes.

Growing Advice

Toad Lilies grow naturally in woodland settings in their native Japan, or on moist banks and lowland mountain slopes. They prefer consistently moist soils and for that reason are best sited out of full sun (or if in full sun make sure the soil never dries out). They are ideal in a spot with dappled sunlight in spring and early summer that is better protected from the sun in mid and late summer. Treat them otherwise like any other herbaceous perennial plant and protect young growth where possible from slugs and snails. They will spread around slowly where happy and so are easily controlled.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
