Thalictrum isopyroides

Dwarf hardy Meadow rue delicate yellow flowers above mounds of blue-green fern-like foliage

Established plants in 1-litre containers

Description

Thalictrum isopyroides is a less commonly seen and grown Meadow rue that is no less lovely for its rarity. Thalictrums are a popular plant at the moment for good reason – they are much loved by wildlife and are quite unique among garden plants, providing an airy, delicate presence that beautifully complements bolder heavier-set planting and flowers at unusual times of the season (depending on the variety). This species is smaller than many of the more regularly seen Thalictrum and has compact, dense foliage made up of tiny delicate leaves that have a lovely blue-green colour. It reminds us of Boston ferns or a dainty parsley, though unlike the fern is more upright and has the benefit of being hardy enough for the garden! In early summer it puts on sprays of subtle yellow-green flowers that provide interest before mid-summer flowers have hit their stride, but the lovely foliage stays looking well throughout the season.
These established plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 50 to 60cm with a spread of around half that.

Growing Advice

Thalictrums will grow well in full or partial sun locations. This species is found in the wild in the highlands of central Asia, and while it doesn’t like to dry out too much it also likes the sharp drainage associated with higher altitude soils. It’s not a big plant and is relatively slow growing, so avoid giving it a spot where it will get swamped too much by other plants. A spot in the front of a border, on a slope or in a rocky area will be ideal. Because it’s slower growing in our experience they are better grown on in 2-litre containers and planted out when they have got closer to their ultimate height.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
