Description
** With cooler temperatures and more rainfall we find that autumn is a perfect time for planting new plants. Please be aware however that these plants have recently been cut back in preparation for autumn and winter. We do this to ensure the plants stay healthy by managing pests and diseases. Please be assured that the plants have strong root systems and so will regrow a little while the weather remains mild. They will grow back and flower most strongly from spring next year. **
****
Teucrium hircanicum, commonly known as the Caucasian Germander, is an extremely long-flowering herbaceous perennial that will adapt to almost any situation. It provides useful vertical accents in herbaceous borders, its dusky pink flower spikes, similar to many salvias, appearing in early to mid summer and lasting through until the frosts. The flower spikes are often two-toned, as earlier flowers fade out, new flowers emerge, and new buds grow alongside carrying the next round of flowers on the spike. The compact, busy foliage emerges early in the season and provides a useful foil for flowering bulbs and a range of contrasting perennials and shrubs, as well as looking good in its own right.
Growing Advice
Teucriums hircanicum is a hardy, clump-forming perennial plant that will return every year after dying back in winter, and that will grow in a range of conditions, from full sun to medium shade. They are best near the front of borders where their flower spikes can be appreciated, and best grown in lighter, well-drained soil – though they are quite adaptable, in our experience.
