Description
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ is a less-seen shrubby Saliva with delicate small leaves and subtle and attractive flowers tipped with mauve / lilac with a maroon colour at the base fading into purple lower down. It is long-lasting flowerer, and like all other shrubby salvias is loved by bees and other pollinators. It flowers from early summer right through until autumn, and work well combined with roses, in herb gardens or among other herbaceous planting. We also grow them in containers where they make wonderful, long-lasting displays. Because of the subtle flowering colours on this salvia we find them best grown on pots near seating areas so they can be seen close-up.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 90cm (35 inches) with a spread of around 60cm (24 inches)
Growing Advice
Salvia ‘Oriental Dove’ are easy plants to grow and care for. In general they prefer good drainage and as much sun as possible, and are fairly drought-proof though they shouldn’t be allowed to completely dry out. For the most prolific flowering, cut back to a low bud in early spring, deadhead through summer and trim again in late summer to promote autumn flowering. They also benefit from pinching out when in early growth in the season to keep the foliage compact and dense. Though hardy a deep frost shortly after pruning might delay growth and flowering, so provide some protection if a frost is forecast and you’ve recently pruned back, or delay pruning back until frosts are clear for the season.
