Rodgersia aesculifolia (Chestnut-Leaved Rodgersia)

Large-leaved, architectural plant with bronze-green foliage and plumes of soft white flowers in summer

Established, Garden-Ready Plants in 2-Litre Containers

Description

Rodgersia aesculifolia demands attention – and space! It is grown predominantly for its attractive, rich-green textured leaves that start to mound into a large clump from the moment the plant emerges in spring. The leaves, which emerge an attractive bronze in spring and settle into a rich green in colour as the season progresses, are strongly divided and bear a striking resemblance to those of a chestnut tree – albeit it twice the size! From mid summer the attractiveness of the plant is supplemented by large plumes of white flowers, similar to those of Astilbes and other woodland and marginal plants like Aruncus. The large robust leaves make for a great contrast with the lacey filigree foliage of other woodland marginal lovers like ferns or polemoniums.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They can grow to an ultimate height of up to 2 metres (a little over six feet) in flower in the right soil, with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Textbooks will say to grow Rodgersias in damp, shady spots – the margins of woodlands and waterways are ideal in this regard. But in our experience they can also thrive in sunnier locations – though the large leaves will always make a ready supply of water in the soil essential, so they will suffer if the soil is allowed to dry out. The large leaves can act as sails, so they will also be better in sheltered spots, or where there are trees and large shrubs around to act as a windbreak.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
