Potentilla dahurica ‘Abbotswood’

Hardy shrub with profuse displays of small white flowers. Award of Garden Merit.

Established shrub in two-litre containers

Description

Potentilla dahurica (formerly Potentilla fruticosa) ‘Abbotswood’ is a bushy deciduous shrub with an upright habit and a mass of white flowers with yellow centres from late spring to the first frosts, flowering over a long-period. The flowers contrast beautifully with the fine, dark green / blue foliage. It’s a really easy plant to grow and care for, and is very tough, withstanding the coldest weather in winter and drought in summer – and as long as it doesn’t sit in wet soil over winter and gets sufficient sun in the spring and summer it will flower its socks off year after year. Abbotswood is seen as the cultivar with the best white flowers of any shrubby potentilla and has been awarded an Award of Garden Merit to reflect this. Shrubby potentillas can be used as specimen shrubs, as part of herbaceous or shrub borders, or even informal hedging.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of 60-90cm (24-36 inches) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

The only two real considerations when growing shrubby potentillas like this is to make sure the soil is reasonably well-drained, and to site the plant in a location where it gets at least partial sun during the spring and summer months. Otherwise it isn’t fussy about soil and can tolerate a degree of drought and poor soil.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
