Philadelphus x lemoinei

Beautiful, highly scented white-flowering shrub with upright habit

Established, Garden-Ready Shrubs in 3-Litre Containers

Description

Philadelphus x lemoinei, often better known as the Mock Orange plant, is a lesser known variety of this popular garden shrub that has been a great find for us at the nursery. It looks superficially similar to regular Mock Orange plants, with neat mid-green leaves and white flowers with soft yellow centres. But where these have a cascading habit, Philadelphus x lemoinei is an upright grower. Most strikingly are the scent of the flowers – which have sweet citrus notes that on a sunny day can scent the air through the whole garden. We have one growing close to a conservatory and the flowers, when they arrive in June, fill the air inside the house as well. In our view it should be grown more widely – we wouldn’t be without it.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 3-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 1 and a half metres (5 feet or so) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Dead easy to grow – all you need to do is give it a bit of space to shine and soil that doesn’t get waterlogged or dry out completely. It’ll flower and scent the air best when given a full sun setting – it’s the sun that really brings out the scent we find. But it will still flower happily in partial shade spots. It flowers on old wood, so if you want to prune it to shape do so after the flowering (which can continue right through the middle of summer). It will reach up but thickens out over time, so be patient with it and you’ll be rewarded!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
