Description
Persicaria runcinata ‘Purple Fantasy’ is a perennial plant grown principally for its mounding, exotic multi-coloured foliage. The foliage grows on upright stems, and creeps vigorously from stout rhizomes. Triangular leaves emerge maroon-purple in spring, turning green and developing purple markings, with leaf undersides tinged pink; these are held on short winged stalks. Tiny pink or white flowers in 1cm pompoms bloom in profusion and are borne on stem tips of slender stems from midsummer to autumn.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost, and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) and a spread of around 100-150cm (40-60 inches).
Growing Advice
Persicaria runcinata plants are generally pretty easy plants to grow. They can be vigorous, so appreciate some room to grow into. They are not very fussy about soil but get on better in soil that remains moist (but not water-logged), particularly when grown in full sun. Full sun isn’t absolutely necessary, but the colouration tends to be stronger where the plant can be given more sun.
