Penstemon digitalis ‘Mystica’

Attractive long-flowering lavender-pink-flowered penstemon with semi-evergreen, bronze foliage

Established plant in 2 litre container

Description

Penstemon digitalis ‘Mystica’ is quite a change-up from the usual garden penstemons. It has large, lush foliage that emerges a deep bronze colour in spring before maturing through green (keeping the dark colouration on the underside of the upright leaves) before maturing to red in the autumn. Multiple stems emerge in summer and open out into masses of light lavender-pink to white flowers, flowering over a long period. The long stems make for great cut flowers and the flowers attract all manner of pollinators.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 70cm (28 inches) with a spread of around half that.

Growing Advice

Penstemons of all sorts are relatively easy-to-grow and fuss-free plants. This cultivar is more adaptable in terms of soil than most penstemons, but generally they do better in soil that is well-drained rather than heavy soils, and while they like as much sun as possible, will perform in partial sun locations. The main thing to remember with penstemons is to leave the foliage on until late in winter or early spring to protect the crowns of the plants from cold weather, after which they can be cut down to the ground to make way for freshly emerging new growth.
