Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Heavenly Blue’

Trouble-free, reliable perennial with tubular, mauve-blue flowers over a long period in summer

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Heavenly Blue’ is a reliable, pest and disease free perennial that grows in clumps and with green-blue foliage that remains semi-evergreen through winter. It looks great in a range of garden schemes throughout the year, but saves its best show for summer, when flowering stems rise above the foliage and buds open out into vibrant lavender-blue, bell-shaped flowers. They are much loved by wildlife as they have a long flowering season and, along with campanulas, offer those much sought after bold blue shades to garden borders or containers.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 50cm with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Penstemons of all sorts are relatively easy-to-grow and fuss-free plants. They prefer soil that is well-drained rather than heavy soils, and while they like as much sun as possible, will perform in partial sun locations. The main thing to remember with penstemons is to leave the foliage on until late in winter or early spring to protect the crowns of the plants from cold weather, after which they can be cut down to the ground to make way for freshly emerging new growth.
