Malva moschata

UK native wildflower with abundant romantic pastel-pink flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Malva moschata, commonly known as Musk Mallow, is a beautiful hardy perennial wildflower native to the British Isles and closely related to the Common Mallow. It is often found growing happily in hedges and field margins, or in wildflower meadows. It has large, deeply lobed mid-green leaves that tend to cluster towards the base of the plant below the slightly hairy, robust stems. From mid-summer the stems branch out into a profusion of buds that open out into pretty, saucer-shaped baby-pink flowers with a very delicate musk fragrance, which is more notable when used as cut flowers in the house. Its relaxed habit and soft-pastel flowers make it a perfect addition to a cottage garden scheme but it is also at home in wildflower gardens, and is much loved by pollinators for its open, accessible flowers.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to a height of around 80cm (around 30 inches), possibly more in rich soils, with a spread slightly less than this (around 60cm, 23 inches or so).

Growing Advice

Musk Mallows are generally dead easy to grow, but will do best in full-sun locations in drier soils with good drainage. Otherwise it isn’t fussy about soil types though may flower more readily and grow more sturdily in at least moderately fertile soils. We also find it a better mingler than soloist, where it adds a sense of whimsy and romance to mixed borders.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
