Description

Lythrum salicaria is an architecturally striking hardy native perennial that brings dynamic height, vibrant colour, and vital ecological value to the garden. An ever-present of the wilder margins of untouched areas here in the south-west, this wetland classic, commonly known as Purple Loosestrife, is famous for its statuesque, poker-like flower spires that rise proudly above borders and watersides from midsummer through to early autumn. It forms robust, dense clumps of upright stems clad in handsome, willow-like lance-shaped green leaves. In mid-summer, it is topped with dense, tightly packed spikes of small, star-shaped vivid magenta-purple flowers that provide a stunning vertical feature and fade out neatly to provide vertical interest and wildlife sanctuaries well into autumn.
