Description
Lupinus ‘Gallery Pink’ is a hybrid derived from the famous Russell hybrid lupins, which are grown for their garden presence and the reliable quality of the plants. Like all garden lupins mounds of fresh, mid-green palmate-type leaves emerge in spring, before flower spikes arrive in early summer and rise up high above the foliage, which darken from white-green into a deep magenta colour before opening into pink with flushes of yellow. The open flowers fade into a peach colour, giving the whole inflorescence a multi-toned, painterly coloration that provides a beautiful accent to the garden in mid-summer. Lupins are plants not to be without in any classic cottage garden scheme, but because of their form and strong lines they also work well in more modern arrangements.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 90-120cm (3 to 4 feet) with a spread of around 40cm (16 inches).
Growing Advice
Please be aware – these plants have recently been cut back in preparation for autumn and winter. We do this to maintain plant health – please be assured that they will grow back during the warm weather in the remainder of the growing season and will be strong plants ready to flower next year.
Lupins are a plant best grown in full sun for the most prolific flowering. They prefer soils that are evenly moist and moderately rich, with decent drainage, but can be adaptable as long as they are not allowed to dry out or drown in boggy soils in winter. Deadhead the flowers to encourage new flower spikes and give them plenty of room to avoid the foliage becoming effected by powdery mildew, especially if the plant is stressed in very dry or very wet soils.
