Lotus corniculatus (Bird’s Foot Trefoil), 2 x 1 litre plants

Low-growing native wildflower with bright yellow pea flowers in summer

Price is for two established plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Lotus corniculatus, more commonly known as Bird’s Foot Trefoil, is a lovely little native perennial wildflower that is found regularly in meadows, grassy and coastal areas across the UK. We find it a really jolly little plant that works beautifully naturalised in grass or in wildflower areas, and is particularly good for wildlife, being a favoured food source for caterpillars, including those of the Common Blue and Six-Spot Burnet butterflies. It has a lax habit and tends to scramble through taller growing plants around it, which makes it all the more of a sight, in our view, when the butter-yellow pea flowers pop out in summer (the flowers fade to reddish-orange later, hence it’s other popular name, the Eggs and Bacon plant) and carpet the ground around. Like other pea-family plants, it has nitrogen-fixing nodes which helps to feed the soil and other plants around it as it dies back in winter.
These established plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in one-litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of about 20cm and will slowly spread out to around 50cm or so.

Growing Advice

These are generally easy-going, long-lived wildflowers that do best in poor soils with good drainage with a good amount of light – hence why you often see them naturalised around, chalky or otherwise rocky meadows surrounding cliff tops. They are fully hardy and once established will only need keeping in check as they scramble around. They are great for wildflower meadows, in open-garden settings or in gravel or rock gardens.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
