Lobelia siphilitica

Bold, blue-flowering hardy perennial Lobelia well suited for pond margins and damp areas

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Lobelia siphilitica, commonly known as the Blue Cardinal Flower, is like most lobelias a lover of reliably moist locations alongside rivers, bordering ponds or lakes, or in low-lying bog areas or damp woodland areas. It looks amazing in clumps, with fresh, lush foliage with a finely serrated edge that darkens to a deep green as the season progresses and deep blue flowers that open on the massed spikes rising above the foliage from mid-summer onwards. Lobelia siphilitica, grown in the right spot with access to plenty of moisture and rich soil, can be a really reliable performer and will add plenty of architectural and colourful interest to a mid to late summer garden.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 90cm (3 feet or so) and a spread of around 50cm (1-2 feet).

Growing Advice

Lobelia siphilitica plants need consistently moist soil to really thrive, and won’t do well in borders that dry out in the summer months. It also prefers rich, humousy soil, so woodland floors or the rich soils around streams and ponds can be a great spot for them. They like a decent amount of sunshine, but will grow well in partially shaded locations.
