Liatris spicata (Blazing Star Plant)

Classic prairie plant with long-lasting spikes of soft pink tassel flowers from late summer

Established, Garden-Ready Plants in 2-Litre Containers

Description

Liatris spicata (commonly known as the Blazing Star plant) is a classic prairie-style plant with an attractive form and habit that we find provides a real contrast in the summer borders. The grass-like foliage emerges in mid-spring from small corms and is upright and slim but with enough substance to hold its own. As the season progresses the foliage bulks out and from late summer and into autumn the plant sends up spikes that open into tassels of soft pink flowers. Because the flowers open from the top and progress down the stem we find the colour can last for ages and, once the flowering is done, offers structure and presence through its attractive seedheads into late autumn and winter.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 75cm (30 inches) and a spread of around 45cm (18 inches).

Growing Advice

Grow these in full sun – or as much sun as you can. In shadier spots they can still look attractive because of the neat foliage, but they won’t flower as prolifically. As they are a prairie plant found natively in meadows in North America they like some space around them and good drainage – sandy soils are perfect but they can grow in amended clay soils as well. That said don’t let them dry out – while a good established clump can be quite drought tolerant without a ready supply of moisture they won’t flower as strongly.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
