Description
Knautia macedonica ‘Melton Pastels’ is a really good mid-summer flowering plant that mingles and complements a range of planting schemes without ever completely taking over. A typical prairie plant that likes lots of sun and sharp drainage, Knautias have a basal clump of divided, mid-green foliage that emerges in spring before later in the season sending up a succession of wiry stems each topped with a tight globe shaped bud. These in turn open up into lovely soft pastel-lilac coloured pincushion flowers. They are nectar rich, flower for a long period over summer, and much loved by pollinators of all sorts.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our startup nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 70cm (28 inches) and a spread of around half of that.
Growing Advice
Growing advice: Knautia macedonica ‘Melton Pastels’ is by nature a prairie plant, best suited to open spaces under wide, bright skies. It is adaptable however, and will cope in light shade (but flower best in full sun) and in cottage garden and more informal planting schemes. It will also do well in poor soil – but good drainage is important to help the plant come through the winter. The wiry stems make good structure when left over winter.
