Digitalis x mertonensis

Pretty strawberry-pink flowered perennial foxglove

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Digitalis x mertonensis is a cross between our native foxglove, Digitalis purpurea and the perennial yellow foxglove, Digitalis grandiflora. As such it takes D. grandiflora’s more perennial habit, but combines this with the broad basal foliage and large pink flowers of D. purpurea. The soft pink colouring of the flowers help to explain the common name of ‘Strawberry Foxglove’ – though in truth the colour has something of strawberry milkshake rather than the fruit! In any case they are lovely when they appear from early summer onwards, arranged up spikes rising from broad-leaved, heavily textured basal foliage. Like all foxgloves they are much loved by wildlife for their bell-shaped open flowers and easy access to nectar, and can make a real statement when grown in drifts in the early and mid-summer garden.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The flower spikes will reach an ultimate height of about 75cm (28 inches) with a spread of a little over half of that.

Growing Advice

Grow Digitalis x mertonensis much as you would our native foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, that is in rich soil in semi-shaded locations. As one of its parents is Digitalis grandiflora we have tended to find it will take more sun than native foxgloves (though the soil will need to be reliably moist in full sun) but in truth it’s an adaptable plant that will cope in a wide range of conditions. Once flowering is over cut in down to the basal foliage and you may well get more, lower growing flowering spikes later in the season, but you are also helping the plant to store energy to ensure it comes back well the following year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
