Digitalis grandiflora

Elegant creamy-yellow flowering perennial foxglove great planted en masse

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Digitalis ambigua (also Digitalis grandiflora, or the Yellow Foxglove) is a perennial species of foxglove with creamy yellow bell-shaped flowers in summer. The foliage is smooth and finely textured, unlike the UK’s native foxgloves, and dense without ever taking over quite as much as that of Digitalis purpurea. The flower spikes, which emerge in early summer, are also a little more compact than native foxgloves, reaching to a height of around 90cm (3 feet) at the most, and opening out into a mass of lovely delicately coloured flowers that have a creamy yellow colour on the outside and a light brown speckling on the throat of the flowers.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 90cm with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Digitalis ambigua grows natively on woodland margins on the slopes of the Alps and the Pyrenees, so want a bit more sun and light than our native foxgloves – though by preference they still like partially shaded locations with some protection from the mid-afternoon sun. In our view they look amazing when massed on gentle slopes in informal schemes (like all foxgloves, they have a slightly wild, naturalistic vibe about them), where they can sway gently in the breeze and the late-afternoon sun can light up the speckled throats of the flowers. They aren’t too fussy with soil, as long as it’s not too wet or too dry – and the tall flower spikes can be removed to encourage flowering side shoots or to avoid too much self-seeding.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
