Bistorta officinalis (Bistort / Persicaria)

Lush, broad-leaved hardy perennial with spikes of pale pink flowers from early summer

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Bistorta officinalis (previously Persicaria bistorta) is a lush, generous semi-evergreen (some of the foliage will persist in winter) perennial with an Award of Garden Merit from the RHS. It is well-suited to partially shaded spots where it will grow vigorous to fill empty spaces, putting out clumps of strong, fresh foliage in spring and combining this with densely packed tall pale-pink flower spikes from early to mid-summer.
It works well in woodland-themed gardens but is versatile enough to look at home in a number of different schemes, and can be used as ground cover or as front of border plants. It looks particularly good alongside water margins and streams and in bog gardens, where the damp soil will help the plant thrive.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of around 60cm (2 feet or so) and where happy will slowly spread, forming small colonies (though they are easy enough to control).

Growing Advice

Bistorts are generally very easy to grow. They prefer to be on the moist side – hence they are well suited to damp gardens or water margins, but will survive in drier soil, though perhaps without as dense a flowering display. They are very hardy and will come back strongly each spring. They are also generally pest-free and avoided by slugs and rabbits, despite the lush-looking foliage!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
