Viola odorata ‘Cordelia’ (2 x 1-litre plants)

Pretty, low-growing perennial Violet with pink-white flowers and delicate scent

Price is for two plants in 1-litre containers

Description

Viola odorata ‘Cordelia’ is a fragrant perennial Violet that is very easy to grow and makes a great addition to the edge of a shady woodland border or in a container in the shadow of a fence or wall or similar. It has a delicate scent and a neat, compact habit, with mounds of fresh green foliage emerging in late winter that continue to provide interest and colour even when the plant is not in flower. The flowers start to emerge shortly after the foliage in early spring, a soft, pale-pink colour, often with a darker underside, with that distinctive shape most perennial violas have. While the bulk of the flowers emerge in spring they can in our experience also re-flower later in the season, particularly when the weather is cooler and as the summer wanes into autumn.
These established plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 1 litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to around 10-15cm tall (4-5 inches), with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Relatively easy to grow, sweet violets prefer a shady spot out of the afternoon sun. They aren’t too fussy about soil, but won’t appreciate boggy soil or soil that dries out too much. In our experience they are best grown in a spot that won’t get too crowded out in summer by more aggressive plants either, and so we tend to grow them on the edge of informal woodland paths or in smaller containers that can be used as centrepieces for tables in shady seating areas – raised up like this it’s also easier to appreciate their subtle scent. We’ve also seen them used as houseplants – a plant definitely worth experimenting a little with!

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
