Description
Vinca minor ‘Blue Drift’ (commonly known as Periwinkle) is a dead-easy, versatile and reliable ground cover plant that is great in less formal areas and to cover the ground in shady spots under trees or in woodland schemes. It has evergreen foliage that emerges a vibrant green from creeping vines, and then mature to a lovely rich dark green as the season progresses. From early spring onwards it starts putting up buds that open into shots of bright mauve-blue flowers, keeping going right through spring and often flowering sporadically through summer and into autumn, in our experience.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 20cm (8 inches) and a spread of around 60cm (25 inches).
Growing Advice
Vincas are super reliable plants. They do best in the partial shade provided by deciduous trees where sunlight can get through to them as they come to life in spring but they have some protection from the full summer sun. In truth they are tough plants and will cope with all manner of conditions and soils, but best like richer, organic soils (such as you’d find on a forest floor). Where happy they will slowly spread via runners; if you want to keep them in check just trim them back in spring.
