Spiraea ‘Arguta’

Description

Spiraea ‘Arguta’ (known colloquially as Bridal Wreath) is a lovely shrub that comes with masses of white flowers in mid-spring and an attractive, compact habit that gives it a place in a range of garden schemes throughout the year. The foliage emerges early in the year from arching stems – small grey-green leaves are among the earliest to appear in the garden, and by mid-spring it’s fully greened out. The arching stems are then absolutely smothered with small white flowers growing in clusters through much of April and often into May, providing a really striking accent in the spring garden and great company for spring bulbs and early flowering perennials. The flowers fade away neatly, leaving the grey-green foliage for the the rest of the year – but the small leaves and tidy habit make this a great plant for providing a backdrop to let later perennials and flowering shrubs really shine.

We’ll always find space for one in our gardens because it’s such a great ‘filling’ plant – and because it’s so early to leaf and so easy to grow and care for. We also grow one in a large container so it can be moved to a background spot once its flowering is over.

These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 2 metres with a similar spread, given enough space and good soil.
