Saxifraga x urbium

Ground-covering hardy succulent with masses of airy white-pink flowers from late spring into summer

Price is for 2 plants in 1 litre containers

Description

Saxifraga x urbium is a tough and versatile ground-covering plant that sends up sprays of pink-flushed, white flowers on red stems in late spring and early summer, making a wonderful display – a great option for the ‘May gap’, particularly in shady areas. It forms carpets of dense evergreen foliage made up of rosettes of succulent leaves with scalloped margins. It is a great option for ground cover in a range of locations, and will even do well in dry shady areas. It is easy to care for and will slowly spread without ever becoming invasive; it is shallow rooted so easy to remove where it has grown into places it isn’t wanted!
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1 litre pots (the price is for two of these plants). They will flower in late spring into summer, with sprays of flowers reaching to about 30-40cms and the main foliage staying compact to a maximum of about 10cm high.

Growing Advice

Saxifraga x urbium is a really easy plant to grow. It will handle a range of conditions, sun or shade (though appreciates some protection from hot midday sun) with the exception, perhaps, of heavy damp soils. Once the flowering is over cut the stems back to enjoy the foliage for the rest of the year; it can benefit from a tidy in spring but really doesn’t need much care otherwise.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
