Primula denticulata

Mauve-purple globes of flowers held above clumps of vibrant green foliage in spring

Established plant supplied in 2 litre container

Description

Primula denticulata, commonly known as the drumstick primula is like all primulas a real symbol of spring. Found throughout alpine wooded areas and on the margins or streams and paths across central Asia, they are one of the earliest perennials to emerge and flower, offering an early promise of warmer months to come and an end to the greys of winter. The vibrant fresh green foliage that emerges in early spring is then complemented, later in the season, by strong stems topped by balls of mauve-purple flowers that are much loved by early pollinators.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in 2 litre containers. The foliage will grow in clumps to about 20cm (8 inches) high, with flowers held a few cms above this up to around 30cm (12 inches). The plant will spread to ultimately form a clump about 20-30cm (7-12 inches) wide. Where happy they will self-seed to form small colonies.

Growing Advice

Primulas love the cooler, damper climate of temperate countries. They are often found in woodland settings, where like other spring flowers they have developed to burst into growth as the soil warms and the days grow longer but before the leaves of the trees emerge overhead. They grow best in woodland margins, where the soil is reliably damp and light penetrates through the canopy of leafless trees in spring, before the leaves emerge in the trees to shade the plants from the harshest of the summer sun.
