Primula capitata ssp. mooreana

Lovely little drumstick-type Primrose with violet blue halos of flowers in summer

Estasblished plants in two-litre containers

Description

This little Primula, found natively growing in the foothills of the Himalayas, is rarely seen but no less lovely for it. It has semi-evergreen foliage, sharing the spoon-shaped leaves and compact, rosette form with common primroses but generally smaller and with a light dusting of mealy powder that gives the foliage a silver sheen. The flowering stems appear in early summer and often again in late summer, rising 10cm or so above the foliage like drumstick primulas and opening out into balls of striking violet-blue flowers arranged in a disc or halo around the centre of the inflorescence. Like most primulas it makes a great addition to moist semi-shaded woodland settings, but the slightly unusual appearance of this species, along with its diminutive size and delicate appearance, make it also a good candidate for containers and rock gardens in semi-shaded areas where there is reliable moisture and some protection from the harshest sun.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The foliage will grow in clumps with flowering stems reaching to about 30cm (12 inches) high, and spreading to around 20cm (8 inches). Where happy they will self-seed to form small colonies.

Growing Advice

Much like other primulas, Primula capitata likes areas that are reliably moist as it doesn’t like to grow out. It will do best in semi-shaded locations, making it a good candidate for areas in and around deciduous trees and large shrubs where the canopy cover will provide some protection from the sun in the height of summer. It can also be grown on water margins and bog gardens.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
