Description

Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Cushion’ is a lovely little alpine / moss phlox that forms carpets of mounding, fine and small-leaved foliage that in late-spring and early summer is covered with an absolute mass of attractive pale-blue flowers. The foliage is evergreen and in the right spot will spread neatly and peacefully, carpeting rock gardens and gravelled areas with a sea of green that even without the flowers brings life and vibrancy to otherwise sterile areas. When the flowers do arrive they bring an absolute wash of colour to the green carpets and, once finished, fade away gracefully leaving the neat foliage as the main point of interest later in the season.

These plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1 litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to only around 10-15cm high with the flowers but will spread slowly around, and will flower from May until mid-summer.

Growing Advice

Moss phloxes are typical little alpine plants, and as such appreciate sharp drainage and lots of sun and light (think the top of exposed mountain tops, where the wind and exposure explains why alpine plants tend to be ground-hugging). They will also do just fine in poor soils. We find they clamber slowly over rocks and work well on slopes, particularly raised up where the delicate foliage and flowers come closer to eye-level and can be best appreciated. They will also work in alpine troughs or containers, or at the top of walls where they can tumble down, as long as they have good drainage and don’t sit in winter wet. Once flowering is over a light shear over the top is enough to tidy the plant up to help it provide ongoing interest through the season.
