Papaver orientale ‘Checkers’

Hardy perennial with white and purple flowers with a dark centre from early summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Papaver orientale ‘Checkers’ is a striking oriental poppy with really attractive slightly off-white flowers with purple markings and deep black-purple centres. The flowers are large and have the petals have the lightly ruffled edge that is typical of oriental poppies. In spring the plant re-emerges from its winter slumber with a robust rosette of silver-green basal leaves; as summer arrives the plant sends up masses of wiry stems topped by large globe-shaped buds, ahead of the attractive flowers. We love oriental poppies like this cultivar as much for the form of the plant as the flowers – and there are some perennials where the buds are so strong and pronounced that the anticipation of the flowers makes for almost as much enjoyment as the flowers themselves. The plant is also attractive later in the season when the seedheads mature, giving the plant a presence that mingles well with other perennials throughout the season.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 90cm (3 feet) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Oriental poppies like well-drained soil in as much sun as you can give them, though they will grow in partial shade (but may not flower as strongly). They mingle well with all sorts of other plants, but are particularly suited to more relaxed, informal schemes. They dislike winter wet so avoid really boggy spots but in general are versatile plants and will do well in a number of spots in the garden.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
