Omphalodes verna

Pretty little woodland ground-covering plant with baby blue flowers in spring

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Omphalodes verna, commonly known as the creeping forget-me-not, is a vibrant ground-covering plant that is lovely in more informal spaces and finds itself particularly at home in woodland settings or at the feet of shrubs and trees. It has lovely fresh-green leaves that emerge early in the season and quieten down as the summer progresses to a restful mid-green colour. In early to mid-spring the plant really comes to life with sprays of small baby blue flowers, held on wiry stems in much the same style as forget-me-nots or brunneras. Like these plants it is most at home in woodland settings where it can gently sprawl and provide low-down colour at the feet of shrubs and other mature plants, and find protection from the strongest sun in mid-summer.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 20-25cm (8-10 inches or so) with a spread of around double that.

Growing Advice

Omphaldoes work best in woodland or other informal settings. Like many similar plants they like early season sun to get the best flowering display, and to bring the greatest vibrancy to that fresh foliage. But they will suffer a little if exposed to strong sun in mid-summer for too long. They are not too fussy about soils as long as they don’t completely dry out (so be careful very close to large moisture sucking trees, plant them a little further out or be prepared to give them some water now and again). They’ll do best among ferns in looser soils – think of the soils on forest floors and you can’t go too far wrong. They will gently spread via runners but it is easy to control and you can always dig up clumps and move them around. It is perennial but deciduous, so will die back as the season fades and into winter, before coming again early in the new year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
