Lamprocapnos spectabilis</em19

Hardy perennial with divided foliage and heart-shaped pink and white flowers in spring

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Lamprocapnos spectabilis (formerly Dicentra spectabilis) is a spring-flowering plant that lights up shady areas in the garden and also works really well as part of a spring container garden. The deeply divided mid-green foliage has a slightly silky greyish hue that makes the plant stand out from other early emergers, but it is when the flowers arrive that the plant really comes into its own. The flowers appear in clusters along the length of the fleshy, arching stems of the plant and hang down beneath the stems. They are a mixture of vivid pink and white but, most strikingly, take the form of a heart with a teardrop shape below, hence the common name of Bleeding Heart.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our startup nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60-70cm (24 to 28 inches) and a spread of around 60cm (24 inches).

Growing Advice

Bleeding Hearts are versatile plants, taking a range of conditions from full sun to full shade. They grow best in a partially shaded location, or when protected from the strongest sun early in the year by emerging shrubs and the foliage of trees. The one thing to watch out for is that they are put in soils that are reliably moist through summer, as they don’t like to dry out.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
