Kniphofia uvaria

Red Hot Poker plant with flaming orange and yellow flower spikes from late summer

Established plant supplied in two-litre container

Description

Kniphofia uvaria is commonly known as the Red Hot Poker plant for reasons that make sense as soon as you see the flowers. It’s a vigorous, hardy perennial that puts on mounds of slim, mid-green grassy foliage from spring and then from mid-summer onwards starts to send up flowering stems topped with a spike with masses of deep-yellow buds. These then open into flowers that transition from pale yellow at the bottom, through stronger yellow and into apricot and them flame orange colours towards the top. Once established the plant is free flowering, putting on a display that grabs attention and lights up late summer days.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall, and are supplied in two-litre containers. The flowering spikes will reach an eventual height of around 1.2m (4 feet or so) with a spread of around 60-90cm (2-3 feet). These are vigorous plants with strong fleshy roots and will thrive once moved out of their nursery containers and into the ground or larger display pots.

Growing Advice

Kniphofias are the archetypal sun-lovers. They will tolerate partial shade but with less flowering. Otherwise they prefer well-drained soil – but unlike many prairie plants that also flower late kniphofias prefer rich, humus enhanced soils that remain reasonably moist. Though hardy they are prone to winter rot where the soil is too heavy – you may want to tie the foliage together over winter to protect the crown from some of the winter rainfall.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
