Kniphofia rooperi

Rooper’s Red Hot Poker, bold orange and yellow flowers in late-summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Kniphofia rooperi, commonly known as Rooper’s Red Hot Poker plant, is a fabulous plant for late summer and autumn colour. Just as other perennials have run out of steam in August and September, this Kniphofia throws up thick stems top with buds that open into vivid orange flowers that morph with age to a vibrant lemon colour, providing a flash of colours so bold it’s as if they’ve absorbed all of the summer’s heat and light. Kniphofias mingle comfortably with other late-season flowerers like Rudbeckias and Asters and are adaptable plants, with strong, healthy grass-like foliage that fills out space earlier in the season and offers a promise of the late-summer drama still to come.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 1.2 metres (48 inches) and a spread of around 80cm (32 inches).

Growing Advice

Kniphofias are the archetypal sun-lovers. They will tolerate partial shade but with less flowering. Otherwise they prefer well-drained soil – but unlike many prairie plants that also flower late kniphofias prefer rich, humus enhanced soils that remain reasonably moist. Though hardy they are prone to winter rot where the soil is too heavy – you may want to tie the foliage together over winter to protect the crown from some of the winter rainfall.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
