Houttuynia cordata (2 x 1 litre plants)

Hardy perennial with dense, lush foliage flushed with red margins and pretty white flowers in summer

Price is for two plants in 1-litre containers

Description

Houttuynia cordata is an unusual plant with a lovely dense, compact habit formed of the prettiest heart-shaped leaves. The leaves are a fresh mid to dark-green in colour, with red flushing at the margins and emerge in spring and keep their habit and colour right into autumn. They are classically grown as a marginal plant because they like to keep their feet wet, though warrant careful planting as they can spread rapidly in the right conditions. In summer the natural neat prettiness of the plant is punctuated by an even spread of small to medium sized yellow flowers with white bracts, which contrast beautifully with the silky rich foliage colours.
These established plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 1-litre containers (the price is for two of these plants). They will grow to an ultimate height of about 40cm (15 inches) and will spread via runners to form mats of ground-cover.

Growing Advice

Houttuynias are very versatile, adaptable plants and where and how you decide to grow them will depend on how you want the plants to perform. They are happiest in consistently moist, rich soils and will work best as a marginal plant, even happy with their feet consistently in water. However planted in the ground in such conditions they can rapidly spread and take over an area, so we’d advise containing them by growing them in drier conditions or areas with poorer soil where they are not as vigorous, or by growing them in containers. We have some in large containers in shallow areas of a pond, and find their foliage and flowers combines beautifully with the texture of the water and pond plants like water lilies. But we also grow some in large containers principally for the lush and neat foliage (though the white flowers are a major bonus), which can help them work as part of a tropical scheme or just to ‘green up’ sparser planting schemes.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
