Hemerocallis ‘Stella D’Oro’

Hardy perennial with rich golden-yellow frilled flowers in summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Hemerocallis ‘Stella D’oro’ (‘Star of Gold’) is a lovely cultivar of daylily with a compact, tidy form that makes it perfect for container growing or smaller gardens. The lush, bright green foliage emerges in February and is one of the first harbingers of the summer display. This cultivar puts up sturdy stems covered in rich orange buds in summer, that open into a warm golden-yellow flowers with slightly frilled edges. The underside of the flower retains the deeper orange colour, making the yellow of the flower more pronounced with the contrast, and is particularly attractive when the plant is raised up to eye-level in a container.
Daylilies derive their common name from the fact that the flowers tend to last just a single day, but they come in such a succession that the net effect is a vibrant display of colour that is at its most intense in mid to late summer, but pops in and out all summer long and into autumn, where the weather allows.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm and a spread of around 50cm.

Growing Advice

Daylilies are wonderfully adaptable plants. All they ask for is as much sunshine as possible – they won’t flower as prolifically in partially shaded spots. But otherwise they’ll cope with all manner of soil, from sand to clay, though they’re unlikely to thrive in unamended heavy or waterlogged soils.
Once established they are very resilient to drought and will cope with hot summer days, as their strappy, narrow grass-like foliage has evolved to minimise the surface area exposed to water evaporation and transpiration and they have thick, water-retaining tuberous roots. They are equally tolerant of frosts and very cold conditions and will emerge early in the season regardless of the weather, in our experience. Don’t be frightened to give them a good tidy up in late winter to make room for the new foliage to come through. And like many clump-forming perennials, they will benefit from being divided every few years, or wherever you need to contain them in a space.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
