Helleborus x sternii

Hybrid Hellebore with white and dusky red-pink flowers from late winter and architectural, evergreen foliage

Established plant in three-litre container

Description

Helleborus x sternii, also known as Stern’s Hellebore, is a hybrid hellebore combining the best attributes of Helleborus argutifolius with Helleborus lividus. From Helleborus argutifolius it takes its robust, strong-growing upright habit and foliage, the leaves of which have a slightly silvery sheen and a lightly serrated edge to the leaves. From Helleborus lividus it takes the unusual – but in our view incredibly painterly and attractive – flushed dusky pink colouration on its flowers. When the flowers emerge in late winter and early spring they do so held in clusters above the strong foliage, each flower with a soft creamy yellow front and that faded dusky pink colouration on the back. They are a wonderful addition to a winter garden but also bring a touch of sophistication and artistry to a time of the year often marked by the loud (and equally welcome) colours of daffodils and early tulips.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall in peat-free compost and are supplied in three-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about a 50cm (1 and a half feet) in the right conditions with a similar spread where happy.

Growing Advice

This hybrid hellebore’s parent plants are native to the Mediterranean, and as such Helleborus also does well in brighter conditions than many of our native hellebores. That said we’ve found they do well in sun or shade, as long as they are not allowed to completely dry out in summer or sit in boggy conditions in winter – give them well-drained, humus rich soils (think mountain-side woodlands). They’ll also grow in containers – though share with other hellebores a long tap root and a dislike of root disturbance, so give them plenty of room to breathe.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
