Galium odoratum

Ground-covering woodland perennial with mats of pure white flowers in spring

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Galium odoratum, more commonly known as Sweet Woodruff, is our absolute go-to plant for providing interest in hard-to-grow shady areas under trees. Able to cope with dry, shady areas where trees draw moisture out, it emerges early in the season with whorls of delicate, gently climbing mats of mid-green foliage. From mid-spring it puts on a dramatic show of pure white flowers, absolutely carpeting the area it grows, before settling down later in the season to provide a gentle mat of green interest, great for providing a backdrop for showy shrubs and summer-flowering bulbs later in the season. We’ve yet to find somewhere where it doesn’t grow and gently spread, and in our gardens it will alway have a home mingling among vincas and hydrangeas in woodland settings.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 20cm (7 or 8 inches or so) and gently spread around via runners.

Growing Advice

Sweet woodruff is a plant and forget plant for us, which will cope in a range of soils and conditions but is best suited to shadier or semi-shaded spots under and around trees or shrubs. Because it spreads via runners it isn’t best for a spot where you want tight control, and it can out-muscle other more gentle ground-covering plants, but we’ve always found it easy to control by digging up clumps where it gets into unwanted areas. Though semi-evergreen it benefits from a liberal sheer over (or just pull up the old foliage by hand) in early spring, to allow light and air get reach the new foliage and to get the best flowering display.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
