Eurybia x herveyi ‘Twilight’

Brilliant late-summer flowering Aster with lavender blue daisy flowers and lush foliage

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Eurybia x herveyi ‘Twilight’ is without one of our favourite plants – one we would never do without masses of in our own garden. It’s a later summer performer, and before that it emerges in mid-spring as clumps of lush, mid-green broad-leaved foliage that quickly fills space around it. We love it because it fills out space around it without ever getting invasive (it spreads slowly by rhizomes and can be controlled easily enough by digging up clumps), because it gives the garden a feeling of lushness long before it flowers, and because when it does flower, it’s really spectacular. It looks best in clumps, because when its daisy-like flower do open the colour goes on for a long time and creates a swathe of lavender-blue in the garden that is a complete tonic in a garden that might otherwise be feeling a little tired towards late July and into August. Once the flowers are over it dies gracefully, fading to brown stems with fluffy seed heads that stand through winter and into spring.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are provided in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 1 metre (40 inches) and a spread of around 50cm (20 inches) – though it will gradually spread around if it’s happy.

Growing Advice

Eurybia ‘Twilight’ is a pretty easy plant to grow. It’ll grow well in sun or partial shade, and as long as the soil is reasonable and not too heavy or light it’ll flower away reliably every year. As it slowly spreads clumps can be dug up to control the area it grows in, or moved elsewhere. It is also a candidate for a Chelsea chop, which delays the flowering into August and stunts the height a little. Early in the season it can be a bit of a slug magnet, but in our experience quickly grows beyond any early damage at which stage the slugs find something else to munch on. We leave the seedheads for structure in winter and cut back in early spring. Oh and they really do benefit from being grown in drifts or clumps to maximise the effects of lush vibes of the foliage and the colours of the flowers.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
