Eupatorium cannabinum

Attractive, tall-growing Hemp with umbellifers of fluffy pale-pink flowers from late summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Eupatorium cannabinum is a herbaceous plant in the daisy family that has broad, attractive foliage that grows in a clump and is topped by wide umbellifers of pale-pink flowers in late summer. The flowers emerge from fluffy embellifer heads perched on stems that are flushed with deep red. It’s a classic wildlife plant – loved by butterflies in particular who enjoy the easy access to nectar provided by the form of the flowers – it is an attractive addition to more informal areas of the garden but is also versatile enough to work in mixed borders and wildlife-focused gardens of all sorts. Natively it appears most on water margins where the soil is reliably moist.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 150cm (60 inches) with a spread of around half of that.

Growing Advice

Eupatoriums are well suited to UK climates, and in our experience tend to be almost indestructible without ever being invasive. Eupatorium cannabinum would ideally grow in reliably moist soil (it also has some tolerance for growing in water margins and bog gardens) in full sun. It will also take partially shaded locations but can otherwise grow in a variety of soils. Leave the flower heads over winter for good structure and wildlife interest through the colder, wetter months of the year.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
