Digitalis grandiflora ‘Carillon’

Dwarf foxglove with soft yellow flowers with speckled throats, flowering from early summer

Established plants in two-litre containers

Description

Digitalis grandiflora ‘Carillon’ is a gentle, dwarf foxglove that makes an unusual addition to the spring and early summer garden. The semi-evergreen foliage is smaller and more refined than the large foliage of our native foxglove, and has a lightly velvety texture with strong striations in the mid-green leaves. From early summer it will send up spikes from the basal foliage that open out into masses and masses of funnel-shaped flowers that are a soft, pale-yellow colour with orange speckles in the throat of the flowers. Unlike our native foxgloves it is reliably perennial, and should come back year after year.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown in peat-free compost at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in two-litre containers. The flower spikes will reach an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) with a spread of a little over half of that.

Growing Advice

Foxgloves are woodland plants and do best in semi-shaded positions (though they will grow in full sun). They also like humus rich soil – think here of a woodland floor and you can’t go too wrong. They will self-seed around if left, though they don’t always come true to seed, particularly if grown near other types of foxglove or wild plantings. They look fabulous planted en masse – we tend to enjoy the display, collect the seed (or scatter it around) and then cut back the spikes – often we find that new spikes come up through the summer.

Before ordering with us please make sure you read the pages below to help you understand what to expect when buying plants online from a nursery such as ours. For instance the photographs in our listings are intended to give you an impression of our plants in their mature (and usually flowering) form. The last photograph in this listing provides an indication of the size of the plant to expect when you buy from us. It is not a guarantee of the way the top growth will look when you receive the plant(s), as this will depend on the time of the season you have ordered the plant and it simply isn’t possible to provide photographs of the plants at every stage of growth during the year. Plants ordered in spring, autumn or winter for example may have much reduced or tired top growth that will regrow later in the season / the following season and you should be aware of this when ordering at these times. If you have any questions about the current condition of any of our plants please do get in touch, or see the links below for more information about what to expect.
